Harry’s wife, Lyme Regis artist Christine Allison often ‘phones Harry up on his mackerel fishing trips and asks him to bring her home a mackerel.

Not for supper but as her subject for an oil painting. She loves their beautiful iridescent colours and the wonderful greeny-blue they are when super fresh straight from the sea. Christine likes to paint from a real mackerel for every painting because each one is different, rather like zebras no two are alike. Do have a look in the bucket of fish next time you are out with Harry on a Lyme Regis mackerel fishing trip, each mackerel has it’s own individual striped marking, it’s quite fascinating.

There are ‘Harry May mackerel’ pictures by Christine as far north as Inverness and as far south as St.Ives. A client from Swanage ordered one especially to go over a very swish Italian sideboard he had commissioned because (apart from the fact he loved mackerel) that particular greeny-blue was exactly the colour of the piece of furniture.

Christine’s mackerel pictures range in size from 6 inches to as large as 6 foot in size and all sizes in between. The little ones can be found for sale in ‘Rummage’, a treasure trove of a shop opposite the Post Office in Lyme Regis. The bigger ones Christine paints to commission. Prices range from £15 to £1,500 for the biggest. Give Christine a ring on 07971 624856 or talk to Harry on your trip if you would like a mackerel painting for your home as a grand memento of your mackerel fishing trip with Harry aboard aboard Marie F or Sunbeam.
